The Jacksonville Sharks were charter members of the World Football League (WFL). They hosted the leagueâs first nationally televised game on July 10, 1974 before nearly 60,000 fans in the Gator Bowl. Swimming in a sea of red ink, the team was taken over by the league. Unable to find a new owner, the league folded the Sharks before the end of the season. When the WFL kicked off its second season in 1975, the city was represented in the form of the Jacksonville Express.Â
