The Edmonton Drillers brought top-flight soccer to Alberta at the peak of the boom, competing in North American Soccer League (NASL) from 1979 to 1982. Outdoor matches were staged at Commonwealth Stadium, where the club drew solid crowds of around ten thousand in its early seasons before a late move to smaller Clarke Stadium. The Drillers also embraced the league's winter indoor game, capturing an indoor championship in 1981 in front of a then-record crowd.
