Titles: WHL champions 1971–72

The Denver Spurs spent six seasons in the Western Hockey League (WHL) and produced one of the most important moments in Colorado sports history: in 1971–72 the Spurs defeated the Portland Buckaroos four games to one in the Lester Patrick Cup finals to become the first professional sports franchise of any kind in Colorado to win a championship.

After the WHL folded in 1974, the Spurs spent a transitional season in the Central Hockey League before jumping to the World Hockey Association (WHA) for 1975–76. The WHA experiment was short-lived — Denver fans, who had spent three years anticipating an NHL expansion bid, never embraced the WHA as major-league, and the Spurs averaged just 3,000 fans in their 16,800-seat arena. The franchise lasted only 41 games before relocating mid-season to Ottawa as the Civics, making them one of the shortest-lived franchises in WHA history.
