The Charlotte Hornets began as the New York Stars, who were charter members of the World Football League (WFL). They played in the league’s first nationally televised game on July 10, 1974, visiting the Jacksonville Sharks. Unable to secure a lease at either Shea Stadium or Yankee Stadium, the team wound up playing its home games at Downy Field on Randall’s Island. After the league’s 13th week, the team moved to North Carolina and became, for one game, the Charlotte Stars, after which they were known as the Charlotte Hornets. In Charlotte the team was strongly supported, at least by WFL standards, but like many of the league's teams was plagued by financial issues.
