Boston's first taste of top-flight professional soccer came in 1967, when local sports owner Weston Adams was awarded a franchise in the United Soccer Association — one of two rival leagues whose 1968 merger created the North American Soccer League. Rather than build a roster from scratch, the club fielded an entire import: Ireland's Shamrock Rovers, supplemented by a handful of guest players, took the field under the Boston Rovers name.

Playing home matches at the Manning Bowl in Lynn, the Rovers struggled, finishing sixth and last in the Eastern Division with just two wins in twelve matches. When the league folded into the new one for 1968, the Rovers were left behind and Boston's pro soccer torch passed to the newly formed Beacons.
