The Birmingham Fire were one of the original members of the World League of American Football. Despite a lack of star players, Chan Gailey led the team to the playoffs in both seasons it played. Following the 1992 season, the league was put on hold and later returned solely as Europe-only operation, leaving Birmingham without a team.
