The Birmingham Fire played two seasons in the WLAF / NFL Europe from 1991 to 1992 at Legion Field, the longtime college football venue that had hosted multiple Birmingham pro franchises before. The Fire built one of the WLAF's stronger North American programs and made the postseason in both of the league's first two seasons.

Head coach Chan Gailey guided the Fire to the 1991 World Bowl semifinals, and Birmingham remained competitive throughout the league's North American era. The Fire folded with the rest of the U.S. and Canadian franchises when the WLAF suspended operations after 1992 and relaunched as a European-only competition in 1995.
