Washington Sports History

Washington's most overlooked pro sports chapter is the Seattle Steelheads of the West Coast Negro Leagues, who barnstormed and competed at the highest level of segregated baseball in the 1940s and remain one of the most important Black baseball franchises ever based on the West Coast. Two decades later, the Seattle Pilots gave Seattle its first MLB season in 1969 — a franchise so financially unstable it was sold and relocated to Milwaukee within months, becoming the Brewers, but immortalized by Jim Bouton's Ball Four. Today, the Washington Wolfpack carry the state's pro football flag in the UFL. Beyond Seattle, Tacoma, Spokane, and the rest of the state add layers of minor-league and indoor pro history.
