Tacoma's AAA baseball franchise — established in 1960 and known today as the Rainiers (since 1995) — went by a different nickname almost every year of its early history, typically taking on the identity of its current MLB parent club. For the 1979 season alone, the team was known as the Tugs in the minor leagues Pacific Coast League.

The one-year Tugs identity is now a curiosity from an era when minor-league nicknames changed with affiliation contracts. The franchise has been the Tacoma Rainiers since 1995 under stable Seattle Mariners affiliation.
