The Salt Lake Trappers were an independent Pioneer League club with no big-league parent to feed it talent, playing at Derks Field from 1985 to 1992. Backed by an ownership group that included actor Bill Murray, the Trappers won four Pioneer League championships and reeled off 29 consecutive wins in 1987 — still the longest winning streak in professional baseball history, surpassing the 1916 New York Giants' 26-game mark.

Memorabilia from the record-setting 1987 squad is preserved at the National Baseball Hall of Fame. The Trappers folded after the 1992 season, when affiliated baseball returned to Salt Lake City.
