About the Philadelphia Stars

The Philadelphia Stars were the most successful franchise in original United States Football League history — three straight USFL Championship Game appearances, two championship rings, and a roster stocked with future NFL Pro Bowlers. Founded in 1983 and based at Veterans Stadium and later Franklin Field, the Stars were owned by Myles Tanenbaum and coached by Jim Mora — yes, that Jim Mora — who built one of the deepest, best-coached teams in spring football history.

The 1983 Stars went 15–3 and reached the inaugural USFL Championship Game, losing to the Michigan Panthers. They returned in 1984 with a 16–2 record and won the league title behind running back Kelvin Bryant, linebacker Sam Mills (who would later become a New Orleans Saints legend) and quarterback Chuck Fusina. The team relocated to Baltimore for the 1985 season as the Baltimore Stars and won the league's final championship before the USFL folded after the 1986 antitrust verdict.

The Stars were essentially a proto-NFL roster — Mora, Mills, Bryant, William Fuller, Bart Oates and many others moved on to long NFL careers, and the franchise's coaching staff scattered across the league for decades. The Philadelphia Stars name was revived for the 2022 USFL relaunch, giving a new generation a chance to root for the navy and gold.
