About the Oakland Invaders

The Invaders were one of the original twelve USFL franchises in 1983, owned by Tad Taube and coached by John Ralston, the longtime Stanford and Denver Broncos head coach. Playing at the Oakland Coliseum just two years after the Raiders left for Los Angeles, Oakland leaned into its Bay Area football identity — silver and blue uniforms, a punishing run game, and a defense built around former NFL linebackers. They went 9–9 in the inaugural season and 7–11 in 1984.

Everything changed for 1985 when the Invaders absorbed the disbanded Michigan Panthers, inheriting Bobby Hebert at quarterback, Anthony Carter at receiver, and a veteran offensive line. Coach Charlie Sumner had a Super Bowl-caliber roster on his hands. The Invaders went 13–4–1, won the Pacific Division, and reached the USFL Championship Game where they lost to the Baltimore Stallions — the final game in USFL history. When the league folded after winning its $1 antitrust verdict against the NFL, Oakland's title-game appearance became the franchise's permanent calling card.
