The Detroit Vipers gave the city a second hockey identity, playing all seven of their International Hockey League seasons at The Palace of Auburn Hills. Owned by Pistons owner William Davidson and named for the Dodge Viper under a Chrysler sponsorship, the club built its identity around a purple, black, and silver look distinct from the Red Wings downtown.

The Vipers won the 1996–97 Turner Cup over the Long Beach Ice Dogs, led by captain Stan Drulia and rookie sensation Sergei Samsonov. On October 3, 1997, Gordie Howe suited up for a ceremonial shift at age 69, becoming the only player to appear in professional hockey across six different decades. The franchise folded with the IHL in 2001.
