One of the first Black professional teams was the Cuban Giants. Although the players were not Cuban, the team played in Cuba in the winter. When the team was sold, a falling out caused the franchise to split — and the Cuban X Giants were formed in reference to being "ex-Giants," quickly becoming better than the original team.

The X Giants were founding members of one of the first Negro Leagues — the National Association of Colored Baseball Clubs of the United States and Cuba. Notable players included Grant "Home Run" Johnson, Rube Foster, Frank Grant, Charlie Grant, and John Henry Lloyd.
