The Metros joined the North American Soccer League in 1971, the city's second try at the league after the Toronto Falcons folded following a single season in 1968. Toronto finished atop the Northern Division in its early years but lost to the eventual champion Philadelphia Atoms in the 1973 semifinals, and the club stayed financially stressed throughout its run under original ownership.

In 1975, Toronto Croatia of the National Soccer League purchased half the club for $250,000 and the team was renamed Toronto Metros-Croatia — a separate chapter, with its own crest, that went on to win the 1976 championship. This design represents the original Metros era, before that rebrand.
