The Blizzard name arrived when Global Television Network bought Toronto's franchise and rebranded it on the eve of the 1979 season, debuting with a 2-1 loss to the Houston Hurricane that March. The club qualified for the playoffs in 1979 and 1982, losing in the first round both times, before putting together back-to-back runs to the league final.

Toronto came up short in both, losing the 1983 final 2-0 and then a best-of-three championship series two games to none in 1984 — the last championship the original NASL ever contested, as the league folded after that season.
