The Atoms joined the North American Soccer League as an expansion club in 1973 and delivered one of the most remarkable debut seasons in American pro soccer history. Philadelphia won the Eastern Division, beat the Toronto Metros 3-0 in the semifinals, and defeated the Dallas Tornado 2-0 in the championship match at Texas Stadium on August 25, 1973 — becoming the first expansion team in league history to win a title in its first year.

Coach Al Miller was named Coach of the Year, and goalkeeper Bob Rigby became the first soccer player to appear on the cover of Sports Illustrated. The Atoms also led the league in attendance that season at 11,501 a match, nearly double the average. The club fielded largely American-born talent through 1976 before folding, its 1973 title still the last outdoor professional soccer championship won by a Philadelphia team.
