One of the ten charter members of the 1967 National Professional Soccer League, the Bays advanced all the way to the league championship series, winning the first leg 1-0 in front of 16,619 fans at Memorial Stadium before falling 4-1 in Oakland and dropping the aggregate 4-2. When the league merged with the United Soccer Association in 1968 to form the North American Soccer League, Baltimore stayed on, though the club slipped to 13-16-3 and missed the playoffs.

As the fledgling league contracted from seventeen teams down to five for 1969, the Bays survived but gave up the 50,000-seat Memorial Stadium for Kirk Field, a Northeast Baltimore high school ground, for their final season. That year carried an unusual twist: under the league's International Cup format, the "Baltimore Bays" briefly took the field as an imported English side, World Cup winners Geoff Hurst and Bobby Moore included, wearing the Bays' colours.
