The Chicago Sting were established in 1974 and joined the North American Soccer League (NASL) in 1975. They captured the Soccer Bowl championship twice — in 1981 and 1984 — making them one of the most successful American outdoor-soccer franchises of the era.

After playing four seasons in the NASL's indoor league, the Sting joined the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) on a permanent basis in 1984. The outdoor NASL folded shortly after, and the Sting played out the remainder of their existence as an indoor club until folding in 1988.
