The Arkansas RiverBlades launched as an expansion franchise for the 1999–2000 season, playing out of the newly built Alltel Arena in North Little Rock as part of one of professional hockey's top developmental circuits. Brothers Dave and Tim Berryman secured the arena lease in March 1998 and were awarded the franchise two months later.

The team was originally unveiled under a different name built around a hog mascot, but a state university objected to the wordplay and the imagery, prompting a fan contest that settled on RiverBlades in October 1998.

The RiverBlades never advanced past the first round of the playoffs in four seasons and folded after the 2002–03 campaign.
