Owned by actor Bing Russell (father of Kurt), the original Portland Mavericks were the last independent team in minor leagues baseball. The Mavericks were known for outrageous antics — open tryouts, lighting brooms on fire to celebrate sweeps, and a roster of misfits and rejects nobody else would sign.
Against all odds, the team won division titles in four of their five seasons and became so hated by the league office that opposing organizations would often demote their better players just to beat the Mavericks. Notable players included Jim Bouton and Kurt Russell. The team's story was later chronicled in the Netflix documentary "The Battered Bastards of Baseball."
