The Kentucky Thoroughblades brought professional minor-league hockey to Lexington for five seasons from 1996 to 2001, playing at Rupp Arena and giving the Bluegrass State its first taste of major-tier professional hockey. The Thoroughblades operated as a development affiliate of a major professional hockey league organization, leaning hard into a horse-racing-themed identity that played perfectly to the Kentucky market.

The Thoroughblades' distinctive identity — built around the thoroughbred horse-themed logo, blue-and-bronze color scheme, and references to Kentucky's storied horse-racing heritage — made the franchise one of the most memorable themed marketing efforts in 1990s minor-pro hockey. Financial pressures and the difficulty of sustaining hockey in a market dominated by basketball forced the franchise to relocate to Cleveland after the 2000–01 season, ending Kentucky's brief professional hockey chapter.
