The Portland Thunder played two seasons in the AFL from 2014 to 2015 at the Moda Center, the same building used by the late-1990s Portland Forest Dragons. The Thunder gave the Pacific Northwest its return to arena football after a 15-year absence.

For the 2016 season the franchise rebranded as the Portland Steel, continuing as the same Portland AFL team under new branding. The Thunder represent the original chapter of Portland's AFL revival before the city's final arena football season in 2016.
