The Pittsburgh Gladiators were one of the four founding franchises of the AFL in 1987, playing at the Civic Arena in downtown Pittsburgh. The Gladiators reached the inaugural ArenaBowl I in 1987, falling 45–16 to the Denver Dynamite.
After four seasons in Pittsburgh, the franchise relocated to Florida in 1991 and rebranded as the Tampa Bay Storm — a continuation that produced one of the most successful franchises in arena football history. The original Pittsburgh Gladiators jersey represents the inaugural season and the first championship game in AFL history.
