The World League of American Football launched in 1991 with teams across North America and Europe, then relaunched as a Europe-only spring league in 1995 (rebranded NFL Europe in 1998 and NFL Europa in 2007 before folding). Across that 17-year run, the Barcelona Dragons, London Monarchs, Frankfurt Galaxy, Rhein Fire, Amsterdam Admirals, Scottish Claymores, Hamburg Sea Devils, Cologne Centurions, and Berlin Thunder served as the developmental pipeline for the NFL while building genuine European fanbases. The London Monarchs won World Bowl I in 1991. Outside football, European hockey programs — the Soviets, Czechoslovakia, Finland, Sweden, Germany, and Switzerland — produced some of the most iconic international hockey kits of the 20th century.
