About Cleveland Hockey

Cleveland is one of the great forgotten hockey cities in American sports. The American Hockey League's Cleveland Barons reigned as the AHL's most decorated franchise from the 1930s through the early 1970s, winning nine Calder Cup championships and producing dozens of NHL players over four decades — they were so successful in the AHL that the franchise applied multiple times to join the NHL outright before WWII expansion finally provided an opportunity.

The Cleveland Crusaders gave the city its first big-league hockey identity, joining the World Hockey Association as a charter member in 1972 and playing four seasons at the Cleveland Arena and the Richfield Coliseum. With star goaltender Gerry Cheevers, captain Paul Shmyr and a strong WHA following, the Crusaders made the WHA playoffs three times before the league's 1976–77 contraction.

That same year, the California Golden Seals relocated to Cleveland and became the NHL Barons — making Cleveland an NHL city for the first time. The Barons played two seasons (1976–78) at the Richfield Coliseum before financial troubles forced a merger with the Minnesota North Stars, ending Cleveland's NHL tenure. Cleveland remained a hockey town in the AHL through subsequent franchises (Lumberjacks, Barons revival, Monsters), and the city continues to host pro hockey today.
