The Montreal Wanderers — affectionately known as the "Redbands" — were one of the dominant teams of pre-NHL professional hockey, winning the Stanley Cup four times (1906, 1907, 1908, 1910) across the Eastern Canada Amateur Hockey Association and National Hockey Association eras. Their celebrated rivalry with the original Ottawa Hockey Club defined the sport at the highest level for nearly a decade.

The Wanderers played the very first game in the history of the new major professional hockey league on December 19, 1917, defeating the Toronto Arenas 10–9 at the Montreal Arena. It would be the Wanderers' only major-league win. On January 2, 1918 — just two weeks into the inaugural season — the Montreal Arena burned down in a series of fiery explosions, leaving nothing but rubble. With no replacement venue available, owner Sam Lichtenhein suspended operations after just four actual games (two more were declared forfeits). The Wanderers never returned, ending one of pro hockey's first dynasties. Their place in Legacy Hockey lore was already secure long before the new league was formed.
