About the California Golden Seals

The California Golden Seals were the original NHL team in the Bay Area, born out of the league's 1967 expansion that doubled the size of the league from six to twelve teams. Originally branded as the Oakland Seals, then briefly the California Seals, the franchise was purchased in 1970 by flamboyant Oakland A's owner Charlie O. Finley, who promptly renamed them the California Golden Seals and outfitted them in green and gold uniforms with — most famously — white skates designed to match the team's flashy West Coast image.

The Seals played at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum Arena and never quite found their footing on the ice, finishing under .500 every season of their existence and routinely ranking near the bottom of the NHL standings. Cult-favorite players like Reggie Leach (later a Stanley Cup winner with the Flyers), young Dennis Maruk, goaltender Gary "Cobra" Simmons, and tough-guy forwards Dennis Hextall and Stan Gilbertson kept the team interesting even when wins were scarce. The franchise was also famous for an infamous trade with the Montreal Canadiens that gave Montreal Guy Lafleur in the 1971 NHL Draft — one of the most lopsided deals in NHL history.

After the 1975–76 season the Seals relocated to Cleveland and became the Barons; two years later, the Barons merged with the Minnesota North Stars, ending the franchise lineage that began as the Seals. The team has since become a beloved retro-hockey icon — a touchstone of the wild expansion-era NHL, of garish 1970s uniforms, and of the strange, charming early days of pro hockey on the West Coast. The Royal Retros California Golden Seals collection celebrates every era of that history with apparel for collectors, vintage-hockey fans and anyone who loves the deeper roots of NHL Bay Area hockey.
