The Rainiers were the kings of minor league baseball in the Pacific Northwest. Brewer Emil Sick bought the city's existing minor league club in 1938, renamed it for Mount Rainier and his Rainier Brewing Company, and built Sick's Stadium on the site of the old Dugdale Field. Behind hometown ace Fred Hutchinson and a run of powerhouse clubs, the Rainiers won six league pennants between 1939 and 1955 and stood for decades as one of the West Coast's marquee minor league draws.

The franchise was sold after the 1964 season and rebranded as the Seattle Angels. The Rainiers name returned in 1972 after the major-league Pilots failed and relocated, and the club played five more seasons before folding when the Mariners were announced for 1977.
