The New Jersey Rockets played a single season in the Major Indoor Soccer League, taking the floor for the winter of 1981–82 at the newly opened Brendan Byrne Arena in the Meadowlands. The venture hoped to capitalize on the new venue and the region's soccer roots, but the club struggled financially and declared bankruptcy in mid-1982, shutting down after just one campaign.
