Duluth spent five seasons in the early NFL, entering in 1923 as the Kelleys — named for the hardware store that backed them — and renaming as the Eskimos in 1926. That year the club signed Stanford fullback Ernie Nevers and built the season around him: with little hope of drawing crowds in a city of 100,000, Duluth played a single home game and then barnstormed the rest of the year, 29 games in 112 days coast to coast, with Nevers playing all but about 27 minutes of the schedule.

Sportswriter Grantland Rice dubbed them the “Iron Men of the North.” The tour kept the league solvent through a lean year but wore the roster down; Duluth played one more season, sat out 1928, and the franchise was sold and moved east.
