The Baltimore Stallions stand as one of the most remarkable and successful teams in the history of Canadian Football League expansion into the United States. Active during the 1994 and 1995 seasons, the Stallions became the only American-based franchise ever to win the Grey Cup, establishing themselves as one of the most dominant CFL teams of the 1990s and leaving behind one of the most unique legacies in modern football.
Following the departure of the original Baltimore Colts and the short-lived Baltimore CFL Colts identity, the Stallions quickly built an elite roster and a passionate fan base hungry for professional football. Led by head coach Don Matthews, one of the greatest coaches in CFL history, the Stallions embraced the pace, creativity, and wide-open style of Canadian football and tailored it to a Baltimore audience with immediate success.
The Stallions roster featured several standout performers who became household names among CFL fans. Quarterback Tracy Ham, a dynamic passer and runner, brought speed and explosiveness to the offense. Running back Mike Pringle emerged as one of the most powerful and productive rushers in the league, eventually becoming one of the CFL’s all-time leading running backs. Wide receiver Chris Armstrong, defensive back Karl Anthony, kicker Carlos Huerta, and a deep core of offensive and defensive linemen helped create one of the most balanced, disciplined, and physical teams in the league.
In 1994, the Stallions reached the Grey Cup, falling just short against the BC Lions. The following year, they delivered a dominant championship performance, defeating the Calgary Stampeders in the 1995 Grey Cup to secure their place in football history. This victory made the Baltimore Stallions the only non-Canadian team ever to win the CFL championship, a feat that remains unmatched.
Off the field, the Stallions built one of the strongest cultural identities of any CFL franchise. Their blue-and-silver color scheme, powerful stallion logo, and clean mid-1990s uniform design became instant classics. Fans at Baltimore’s Memorial Stadium embraced the CFL’s exciting gameplay and fast tempo, turning Stallions games into one of the most energetic environments in the league.
When the Baltimore Ravens were announced in 1996, the Stallions organization relocated and became the new Montreal Alouettes. Although the team existed for only two seasons, their two-year run remains one of the most successful and memorable stretches in CFL history, and the Stallions name continues to hold a special place in the hearts of Baltimore football fans.
The Royal Retros Baltimore Stallions Collection honors this unique franchise with a full lineup of heritage-inspired apparel.
