The Washington Federals were a charter member of the original United States Football League (USFL), playing two seasons at RFK Stadium before relocating to Orlando as the Renegades in 1985. Coached by Ray Jauch and quarterbacked by Mike Hohensee then Kim McQuilken, the Federals struggled mightily, going 4–14 in 1983 and 3–15 in 1984. The roster's signature name was running back Craig James, who joined the Federals as a USFL territorial pick out of SMU — half of the famed "Pony Express" backfield with Eric Dickerson — before moving on to a Pro Bowl career with the New England Patriots and a Super Bowl XX appearance. Despite their on-field record, the Federals helped demonstrate that the nation's capital had a viable spring football audience, and the franchise's relocation to Orlando became one of the league's defining moves into 1985.
