Few franchises in Legacy Hockey history capture an era quite like the California Golden Seals. Founded as the Oakland Seals in the league's 1967 expansion from six to twelve teams, the franchise played all nine of its seasons at the Oakland Coliseum Arena and combined poor on-ice results — a 182–401–115 overall record across nine years — with some of the most distinctive marketing gimmicks in the sport.

The Seals' identity shifted dramatically when Oakland A's owner Charlie Finley purchased the team in 1970, renaming them the California Golden Seals two games into the season and changing the colors to green-and-gold to match his baseball team. Finley's signature gimmick — white skates for the players — became one of the iconic visuals of 1970s pro hockey. After Finley sold the team back to the league in 1974, minority owners George and Gordon Gund eventually relocated the franchise to Cleveland in 1976, where it became the Cleveland Barons. The Seals made the playoffs only twice in nine years (both first-round exits), but the franchise's quirky aesthetic and Bay Area cult following have made them one of the most beloved "should-have-been" stories of expansion-era hockey.
