One of the original teams in the ABA, the Buccaneers had early success and made it to the very first ABA Finals — but lost in seven games to the Pittsburgh Pipers. The team made another deep playoff run the following year, but attendance remained low.

After moving home games to Tulane in its third and final season, the team was sold and moved to Tennessee in 1970, becoming the Memphis Pros — the start of a long Memphis ABA run that lasted through the Pros, Tams, and Sounds before reaching Baltimore in 1975. Notable Buccaneers included Larry Brown (Hall of Fame), Steve Jones, Doug Moe, and Jimmy Jones.
