The original Memphis Showboats played two USFL seasons at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium, best remembered as the launching pad for future Hall of Famer Reggie White, who recorded 23.5 sacks across 1984 and 1985. Coached by Pepper Rodgers and quarterbacked by Walter Lewis, Memphis went 7–11 in 1984 and 11–7 in 1985 before falling to the Oakland Invaders in the quarterfinals.

The Showboats name returned in 2022 when the revived USFL placed a team in Memphis, replacing the relocated Tampa Bay Bandits and playing at the rebranded Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium. Coached by Todd Haley, the modern Showboats went 4–6 in their lone USFL season before the league merged with the XFL to form the UFL in 2024. The franchise continued through the UFL's 2024 and 2025 seasons before folding, closing a two-era chapter for Memphis spring football.
