The World Hockey Association operated from 1972 to 1979 as a rival to the top tier of professional hockey, reshaping the sport's economics by signing established stars — including Bobby Hull and Gordie Howe — to landmark contracts and bringing major-league hockey to a dozen new markets.

The WHA also gave young talents including Wayne Gretzky and Mark Messier their first professional opportunities. Its championship, the Avco World Trophy, was won across seven seasons by franchises including the New England Whalers, Houston Aeros, Winnipeg Jets, and Quebec Nordiques. When the WHA folded in 1979, four franchises — the Whalers, Nordiques, Jets, and Edmonton Oilers — joined the top tier of professional hockey.
