The Virginia Squires were the result of the Washington Caps moving south for the 1970 season; that franchise had begun in 1967 as the Oakland Oaks, a charter ABA team. Rick Barry had been the Caps' star and appeared on Sports Illustrated's cover in a Squires uniform, but his contract was traded away before he played a game in Virginia.

Even without Barry, the Squires fielded three future Hall of Famers — Julius Erving, George Gervin, and Charlie Scott — and were unique in splitting home games among Norfolk, Hampton, Richmond, and Roanoke. After Erving's contract was sold to the New York Nets in 1973 and Gervin's to San Antonio in 1974, the franchise folded in 1976, just ahead of the ABA–NBA merger.
