About the Virginia Squires

The Squires were the descendant of the Oakland Oaks/Washington Caps lineage — the ABA franchise that won the 1969 title in Oakland, moved to Washington for one season, then relocated again to Virginia in 1970 with new owner Earl Foreman. They played the regional model that the Carolina Cougars also tried, splitting home games among the Hampton Coliseum, Norfolk Scope, Richmond Coliseum, and Roanoke Civic Center.

The Squires drafted Julius "Dr. J" Erving in 1971 from UMass and watched the rookie average 27.3 points per game and 15.7 rebounds his first year. They drafted George Gervin out of Eastern Michigan in 1972 (he was actually signed mid-season after a college incident). For one impossibly talented stretch, the Squires had Erving, Gervin, Charlie Scott, and Swen Nater on the same roster — four future Hall of Famers and ABA legends. Financial pressure forced the Squires to sell Erving to the Nets in 1973 and Gervin to the Spurs in 1974. By the time the ABA-NBA merger came in 1976, the Squires were broke and were left out of the merger entirely. The franchise dissolved overnight, but the Squires uniforms remain among the most iconic in pro basketball history.
