The Kings were a proposed NFL franchise in 1972, fronted by Hall of Fame running back Hugh McElhenny and intended to play at the planned Kingdome, the stadium that gave the team its name. The group went as far as designing helmets, forming a booster club, and opening a downtown office topped by a giant football.

The booster-club football caught fire, and the Kings' funding ran out before the bid could be completed. The NFL instead awarded Seattle's 1976 expansion franchise to a separate ownership group, the Seahawks, who played their first three decades in the Kingdome originally envisioned for the Kings.
