Owned by actor Bing Russell, father of Kurt Russell, the Portland Mavericks were the last independent team in minor league baseball, unaffiliated with any major league club. The team was known for outrageous antics — open tryouts, lighting brooms on fire to celebrate sweeps, and a roster built from misfits nobody else would sign.

Against long odds, the Mavericks won division titles in four of their five seasons and became so disliked by the league office that rival organizations would sometimes demote their better players just to beat them. Notable players included Jim Bouton and Kurt Russell; the team's story was later told in the Netflix documentary "The Battered Bastards of Baseball."
