The New York Stars were charter members of the World Football League in 1974, bringing the league's boldest experiment to the country's biggest market. Playing at the remote, run-down Downing Stadium on Randalls Island, the Stars struggled to draw crowds from the start.

Mid-season the franchise relocated to Charlotte, North Carolina, and became the Charlotte Hornets, making the 1974 Stars and the 1974–75 Hornets one continuous team.
