The New England Whalers were one of twelve founding franchises of the World Hockey Association and the first team to win the Avco World Trophy, capturing the league's inaugural 1972–73 championship behind player-coach Jack Kelley and goaltender Al Smith. Originally based at Boston Garden, the Whalers moved to Hartford in 1975 after a brief stop in Springfield, giving Connecticut its first major-league professional sports team.

Across seven WHA seasons the Whalers built one of the league's most stable rosters, with stars including Gordie Howe — who joined in 1977 and reunited with sons Mark and Marty — Dave Keon, and Rick Ley. When the WHA folded in 1979, the Whalers were one of four franchises absorbed into the top tier of professional hockey, continuing play as the Hartford Whalers.
