The Los Angeles Aztecs joined the North American Soccer League as an expansion club in 1974 and won the league championship in their very first season, edging the Miami Toros on penalties after a 3–3 draw.

The Aztecs became known for star power as much as results. Singer Elton John joined the ownership group as a minority stakeholder in 1975, and the club later signed Manchester United great George Best and Dutch icon Johan Cruyff, who was named the league's Most Valuable Player in his debut season. The Aztecs folded after the 1981 NASL season.
