The Jacksonville Sharks were charter members of the World Football League in 1974, bringing professional football to a city that wouldn't see an NFL franchise for another two decades. Playing at the Gator Bowl, the Sharks struggled to a 4–10 record before financial collapse forced the league to take over the franchise in September; its final six games were canceled and the team disbanded before the season ended.

New ownership fielded the Jacksonville Express at the Gator Bowl for the WFL's 1975 season. Jacksonville later hosted the USFL's Bulls (1984–85) and, in 1995, the NFL's Jaguars — but the Sharks were the city's professional football starting point.
