The Houston Aeros rank among the most successful franchises in the history of secondary-tier North American pro hockey. The original Aeros played in the World Hockey Association from 1972 to 1978, winning back-to-back Avco Cups in 1974 and 1975 behind Hall of Famer Gordie Howe and his sons Mark and Marty — the only father-and-sons trio to share a professional championship team.

The name returned in 1994 when a new International Hockey League franchise took the ice in Houston, capturing the 1999 Turner Cup over the Orlando Solar Bears in a seven-game final in front of more than 16,000 fans, anchored by IHL MVP Brian Wiseman and coach Dave Tippett. When the IHL folded in 2001, the Aeros moved into top-level minor league hockey, where they played through 2013.
