The Cleveland Barons are the last team to fold from the top tier of professional hockey. The franchise relocated from Oakland in 1976, when minority owners George and Gordon Gund convinced primary owner Mel Swig to move the struggling California Golden Seals to the Gunds' hometown, taking the well-known Barons name from the recently departed minor-league club.

Two rough seasons followed: a 22–45–13 finish in year one and mounting losses that never drew a crowd. In June 1978 the league brokered a merger with another struggling club, the Minnesota North Stars — the surviving team kept the North Stars' name, colors and history. The Barons never made the playoffs in their two Cleveland seasons.
