The Stars name was used briefly when the WFL's New York Stars relocated to Charlotte mid-1974, appearing on early Charlotte marketing before the club formally rebranded as the Charlotte Hornets. The franchise played out the rest of 1974 and the abbreviated 1975 season under both names, giving the Carolinas their first major-league pro football team.
