The Vancouver Royals began play in 1967 as the Vancouver Royal Canadians, a charter member of the United Soccer Association, a league that fielded entire European and South American clubs under American names for a single season — Vancouver's entry was a repackaged Sunderland A.F.C. from England. When that league merged with a rival to form the North American Soccer League for 1968, the club became the Royals.

For that lone NASL season the Royals were led by player-coach Ferenc Puskas, the Hungarian forward regarded as one of the greatest players in the sport's history. The club folded after 1968, when the young league contracted from seventeen teams to five.
