The Salt Lake Golden Eagles spent 25 years across three leagues, from their 1969 founding in the Western Hockey League through 1994. The club moved to the Central Hockey League when the WHL folded in 1974 and dominated its late-1970s and early-1980s peak, winning the Adams Cup three times. In 1984 the Golden Eagles jumped to the International Hockey League, capping their run with back-to-back Turner Cups in 1986–87 and 1987–88.

Long-time owner Art Teece sold the club to Utah Jazz owner Larry Miller before the 1989–90 season; new ownership later relocated the franchise to Detroit in 1994, where it became the Detroit Vipers. From the Salt Palace to the Delta Center, the Golden Eagles delivered a quarter-century of minor pro hockey in Utah.
