The Oakland Oaks were one of the American Basketball Association's original teams, named after the baseball club that had folded five years earlier and partly owned by entertainer Pat Boone. The Oaks were the league's worst team in their first season.

Coach Alex Hannum and All-Star Rick Barry, who joined amid a contract dispute with the cross-bay Warriors, turned the franchise around and won the 1969 ABA championship. Attendance never caught up to the Warriors, though, and after two seasons the Oaks moved on to become the Washington Caps, then the Virginia Squires. Hall of Famers Rick Barry and Larry Brown, along with Warren Jabali, Doug Moe, and Levern Tart, wore the Oaks uniform.
